Washington Redskins Renamed

Owner to Donate Percentage of Revenue to Native American Community Groups

Washington Redskins owner, Daniel Snyder, announced at a press conference today that his football team will be changing its name.

“Let’s face it, the term ‘Redskins’ is offensive to many people and continuing to use it as the name of an NFL franchise is totally inappropriate,” said Snyder.  “This is long overdue.”

Snyder went on to say that, since the team had over the past 75 years made millions of dollars off of merchandise featuring images of Native Americans, it only made sense to use some of that money to help improve the lives of Native Americans.  He announced that the team would be giving a large percentage of its revenue to Native American community and activist groups.

No final decision has been made yet on what the new name will be, although Snyder said that he was leaning towards a name that would be “appropriate for Washington DC and would also refer to a group of people so historically ruthless and without conscience, the very mention should make opponents tremble with fear for everything they consider good in this world… The Washington Lobbyists.”

Instead of “Redskins” how about calling them the “Scarlet Epidermis”??

In further news, the Dolan family announced it was ridding its baseball team of the “Chief Wahoo” logo, recognizing that Snyder’s decision had made it obvious to them they had no choice but to abandon a symbol that made “Redskins” seem positively p.c. The Dolans also are rumored to be planning to change the name of the team to “Spiders,” which was the name of the Cleveland baseball team long before it was renamed the Indians (not, as claimed, after Louis Sockalexis) and is much cooler than Indians anyway.

The Washington Redskins are a privately-owned franchise football team. Granted, ‘Skins is a traditionally derogatory term, but it is not seen that way since the popularity of the NFL took hold in the U.S. If you want to promote the pride and spirit of native americans, remove Christopher Columbus Day from the list of federal holidays- remove his statue from virtually every U.S. city. Now that- that would be justice.

#3 Riblo von Grakenstak… um, please sir, by all means go to (and stay at) the Onion site. It’s a good site, a funny site. And one I’m sure you’ll feel more at home with. Some of us on the other hand are more than a little entertained here. Some of us actually appreciate the amazing effort exhibited here by highly intelligent and articulate people that really have no need to be “funny”. You see, “funny” isn’t the point here. It’s a little more than that. Maybe you’ll appreciate it a little more once you’ve grown up.

Later, they renamed the Cleveland Indians and chose a less overtly racist mascot.

OK, why the tie to Washington DC? The (former) Redskins are the team from Washington State.

If “Skins” is considered derogatory, how about the Washington RedShirts, (shirts or skins?)
Better yet, how about The Washington RedCoats!

How about making football co-ed? And baseball, too? Would that help to create an environment of true egalitarianism in the US?

Or what about eliminating the sport altogether, along with others that promote violence, competition, and rivalry?

Though this issue is a great idea and an impressive effort, I think it shoots itself in the foot (no Plaxico reference intended) with a lousy sports section. A section this uninspired screams “We’re obnoxiously liberal!” and further augments this spoof’s greatest weakness: Few people who disagree with its liberal bent are going to give it much thought, if they read it at all.

Ahhhhh, subtle and brilliant! It took me a few seconds, but I now see that you, Riblet, are doing a sophisticated spoof on angry, clueless, right-wing boors.

It should have been obvious! After all, the alternative, that you were serious, is just too sad a concept to consider for someone possessing the intellect and all-important small motor skills to successfully operate a keyboard such as yourself.

What about the Washington Warriors, or the Ripskins. Then we will have to change KC, NY because of all of the short people… some other basketball and baseball teams too. BTW, Wizards are Warlocks with are male Witches… where would this end? If I were a Native American, I would be honored to have my culture represent an original football team. That’s just my opinion.

Awesome, I too think the name is insulting, especially when you consider that the officiall team roster does not contain a single player of Native American descent. Since over 60% of the team is made up of African Americans, I vote we call them the “Washington Negros”. Or we could be more specific and call them the “Washington Negros, Caucasians, and those three Latino guys”

redskins is NOT racist. learn your history people and stop believing the lies that are fed down your throat by pc idiots who refuse to deal in reality.
The word redskin reflects a genuine
Native American idiom that was used
in several languages, where it grew
out of an earlier established and more
widespread use of “red” and “white”
as racial labels. This terminology was
developed by Native Americans to
label categories of the new ethnic and
political reality they confronted with
the coming of the Europeans.

When Black Thunder wanted to refer
inclusively to all the assembled tribes
and to both the Americans and the
French, he said “red skins and white
skins.” When Big Elk told Clark how
impressed he had been by the obsequies
for Black Buffalo, at which, surely
for the first time, an Omaha principal
chief had given a funeral oration
for his Teton counterpart, he availed
himself of the inclusive term “red skin”
as an expression of solidarity.

the views of the
officials and the local whites towards
Indians were forced to evolve. The
oratorical powers and political skills of
the leading chiefs demanded and
received respect. Local newspapers
that as recently as the month before
were denouncing scalpings now were
publishing the texts of Indian speeches
both as significant news events
and as admirable intellectual achievements.
without the word “redskins”, native americans would have had to wait much longer than they did to start to be treated as equals. it’s a shame that ignorance by extemists have all but buried this VITAL part of american history. having the washington redskins keep their name helps keep these FACTS from being completely buried by lies and stubborn ignorance.

Cleveland changed their name to the Indians, Washington should do the same so when they play Dallas they can play Cowboys and Indians.
