Troops to Return Immediately

U.S. Army helicopters begin moving troops and equipment from Saddam Hussein’s former Baghdad palace.

WASHINGTON — Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom were brought to an unceremonious close today with a quiet announcement by the Department of Defense that troops would be home within weeks.

“This is the best face we can put on the most unfortunate adventure in modern American history,” Defense spokesman Kevin Sites said at a special joint session of Congress. “Today, we can finally enjoy peace — not the peace of the brave, perhaps, but at least peace.”

As U.S. and coalition troops withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan, the United Nations will move in to perform peacekeeping duties and aid in rebuilding. The U.N. will be responsible for keeping the two countries stable; coordinating the rebuilding of hospitals, schools, highways, and other infrastructure; and overseeing upcoming elections.

The Department of the Treasury confirmed that all U.N. dues owed by the U.S. were paid as of this morning, and that moneys previously earmarked for the war would be sent directly to the U.N.’s Iraq Oversight Body.

The president noted that the Iraq War had resulted in the burning of many bridges. “Yet our history with our allies runs deep,” he said, “and we all know that friends forgive friends for anything. Or nearly.” A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Defense confirmed that France would assist the U.S. withdrawal. “The U.S. helped the Soviet Union defeat Hitler. We do recognize that.”

In conflict zones worldwide, leaders and rebels pledged peace. (See ”In Conflict Zones Worldwide, Peace Moves,” on Page A4.)

On Wall Street, reactions were mixed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 84 points, to close at 4,212. While KBR stock was quickly downgraded to a “junk” rating of BBB-, defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grummon started up.

“Now that the war’s over, we’re going to get to go back to developing exciting new weapon systems, instead of just trotting out the ones that are proven to work,” said a visibly excited Robert Stevens, Lockheed C.E.O., before a reporter informed him of the Senate moratorium on new weapons systems development.

“Oh,” said Stevens, looking flushed, and quickly excused himself.

General David Petraeus had a distinctly ashen look as he attempted to put a good face on the situation. “I’ve been trying to make sense of all this, and I have to say that in perspective, we did pretty well,” Petraeus told reporters.

“It turns out that in 1917, the British made exactly the same mistakes we did,” Petraeus noted. “They told the Iraqis they had come ‘not as conquerors but as liberators, to free you from generations of tyranny.’ Like us, they were surprised the Iraqis didn’t feel quite the same. The insurgency against the British started in Fallujah too, and like us, the British Prime Minister warned against leaving Iraq on the grounds that there would be civil war.”

Petraeus smiled wearily. “I guess it’s never too late to learn.”

I saw this on someone’s desk today. My heart soared. Then I realized it was a cruel prank. My heart fell.
Stop breaking my heart! People are dying. Our hope is for war to end. This does nothing to hasten peace. You are wasting precious time and energy that could be devoted to worthy causes, not sophomoric pranks. Though laughter is good medicine, your brand of “humor” is a poisoned pill.

You do not have Ginsberg’s excuse.

JULIA VINOGRAD-GINSBERG

No blame. Anyone who wrote Howl and Kaddish
earned the right to make any possible mistake
for the rest of his life.
I just wish I hadn’t made this mistake with him.
It was during the Vietnam war
and he was giving a great protest reading
in Washington Square Park
and nobody wanted to leave.
So Ginsberg got the idea, “I’m going to shout
“the war is over” as loud as I can,” he said
“and all of you run over the city
in different directions
yelling the war is over, shout it in offices,
shops, everywhere and when enough people
believe the war is over
why, not even the politicians
will be able to keep it going.”
I thought it was a great idea at the time
a truly poetic idea.
So when Ginsberg yelled I ran down the street
and leaned in the doorway
of the sort of respectable down on its luck cafeteria
where librarians and minor clerks have lunch
and I yelled “the war is over.”
And a little old lady looked up
from her cottage cheese and fruit salad.
She was so ordinary she would have been invisible
except for the terrible light
filling her face as she whispered
“My son. My son is coming home.”
I got myself out of there and was sick in some bushes.
That was the first time I believed there was a war.

The authors of this ‘fake’ newspaper are the best example for Europeans like me that you are not all ignorant and blind, as many (although still a minority) of us might think.
This magazine is giving us hope that the US are able to change to the good again after this Bush-disaster has been stopped. Hope that after you folks took the first steps into the right direction, our leaders will walk besides you and do things right as well.

Let’s go together and change this current mess.

You people make me sick. Open your eyes and quit listening to the liberal media. Things in Iraq are not what they make you believe, stop corrupting minds in America to hate people like me. Think about all of the people freed from decades of rule under an iron fist…not only in Iraq, but in Afghanistan. Abandoning the war on terror would be a seriously grave mistake. Get a life people…take a look at the real world…terrorists don’t care who’s president, they’ll still hate freedom and democracy.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen !

My name is Chafik and I am a Kabyle (Berber-Amazigh) from the north center of Algeria. I am graduated from university with a licence degree in English in 2001 and since then, I have been working in the oil industry for American & British companies in the Sahara desert of Algeria. Briefly…I just want to express a point of view in here…!
Well, first of all, I am convinced that war, either it takes place in Iraq, in Georgia, in Jerusalem or in any part of the rest of the world, it is never a joke and it is never something funny at all. I believe that with this edition of NY Times, and with all what we see on the BBC, CNN or France 24, every body understands that Thanks God, there are a lot of people either in the United States of America, in Europe in Africa who do not support war in Iraq. Thanks God, there are people like you who can manage to make things change. I believe that millions of innocent Iraqi mothers lost their children, millions of innocent Iraqi mothers and daughters been raped and killed (something that nobody on earth could even imagine to see happening), millions of innocenet American mothers lost their children (soldiers) in a non- justified war. Saying a non-justified war, I don’t mean that I support terrorism in any of its forms, but there are other ways to act rather than killing and eliminating a whole nation, it is not a video game, it is indeed a real war!!! As I said above, I have been working for american and british oil companies, I do love working for these compagnies, I do have great american and british friends and I do realize that there is a huge part of the respective american citizens, if not almost all, who are against the war in Iraq. I hope that with the arrival of Obama, things are going to change for real and American soldiers will be happy to go back home with their wives, mothers and families.
If only politicians realize that the huge amount of money spent on wars, on killing people here and there, could be used to save the world and to save people dying from different diseases and from civil wars, just like the poor innocent citizens being killed in Darfur and in Somalia…!!! If only we can save the little innocenet children from Brazil who are being killed by gangs in the streets…!!! If only we can use that medical for medical research and cure millions of handicaps around the world !!!
The world, the planet earth is wonderful and we the humans who are the unfortunately the invaders and destroyers…With all the damage we caused to the planet, and if this latter could talk, I’m sure that she will say : ” You the humans have abused of my generosity and should not be treated this way “…
I wish all the best to every person who reads this and I wish the war could end in Iraq right away, in Jerusalem, in Palestine, in Georgia, in Darfur, in Somalia and every where around the world…
A great man once said :” All men are created equal, with some inalienable rights, among which, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ”
” For a peaceful world, Life, Love, Peace & Liberty for Every One ”
Cheers,

For Marine Iraq War Vet, i know how you feel about this news paper, but, i believe that they does not meant that American Troop is the bad guy, if you are really Iraq War Vet, i’m sure that you know exactly how it’s feel at battle field. But, believe me, that most people that fight you in iraq war is feeling much more depressed, anger, lonely than you are, most of them are just an ordinary men with ordinary job (i mean not a terrorist) and suddenly, George Bush send you to Invade their country with that much warfare and they’ll start to think : “right or wrong, this is my country” and even they hate Saddam, they don’t want Any other country’s army set foot on their country, so they start to fight you at all cost.
and one more thing, i’m Indonesian and i’m a moslem, please anyone, don’t mix up moslem and terrorist, the real moslem hate terrorism as Muhammad (May peace be upon him) ever says : “Whoever harm zimmah (Non moslems, but with peace stance with moslems), will fought me at the end of days”, so the real moslem won’t set a bomb in a civillian buildings, and even in a war, moslems shouldn’t attack women, children, old and weak people, because it’s forbidden.

Yes I’m sure your leaders will be right besides us, just as they walked hand in hand with the 9/11 hijackers that lived in your country. We are sooo proud of the way the Germans are helping out in Afghanistan. They stay far to the North, away from any danger. We know who our true friends are…Brits, Aussies, Canadians, Poles. Germany should be ashamed of itself. We stood by you throughout the cold war. When will it be time for Germany to return the favor and stand by the USA.
For the rest of you. The war ends today and it will be 18 months before we have all of the equipment and people out of Iraq. That’s a fact, not a democrat liberal fantasy.

Bush won in 2000 in Florida after all of the votes had been counted by a couple of hundred. Anyone who says otherwise is simply repeating another liberal fairytale. Bush a tyrant? I suggest you go back to school and learn the meaning of the word tyrant. Let’s see…our country was attacked on 9/11. Zero attacks since. Nuff said.
The 46 % of Americans who voted against Obama, voted against Socialism. The change that Obama wants to do will fracture the very foundation of this country. Thankfully he only has two years to do it because America will wake up and vote the libs out of office.

I would like to translate the comment #120 posted by Cesar Romero, and add that besides the realist situation which the government opts to deal with many issues, this idealist and liberal spoof of the New York Times is a way to tell the media, that we need good news. Nonetheless, many columnists do not have the chance to write the truth because of two (and many more) well known facts: 1)Corporations have paid them sometimes a good amount of money to distort or not publish the story; 2)Sadly, the kill them. The last one may not be the case in the United States, but it happens in many countries. I would like to read here the opinion of The New York Times (the real one) journalists, especially those like Nicholas D. Kristoff

What are you talking of? Gerhard Schröder - former german chancelor - did absolutely the right thing to not follow Bush´s call and so did France! Moreover all troops should leave Afghanistan. The germans are hardly do something but defending themselve against attacks - thats all: they are not needed there anymore like all the other troops. Those countries do not need troops but money for schools and infrastructure. That´s probably everything. The rest follows by itself. To remind you: it wasn´t the population of Afghanistan that turned into terrorist. They were occupied by the russian and the only force, fighting against them were religious fanatics - armed by the U.S. They would help themselves to rebuilt what they have lost over the last 30 years, as good as possible and as hard as it is. That doesn´t have anything to do with german troops.

You`re saying, Obama will be thrown out of the office in two years? Go on dreaming. Maybe you also believe in creationism. That would explain a lot: You are simply disregarding the known facts and replace them against lies.
Obama a socialist? What are you talking of? If you could name just one thing, that would back up your theory. Maybe he is a social-democrat, but that´s quite something else than a socialist.
And yes: 46 % may did vote against socialism - because they don´t want to share a little of their money, that they otherwise would not even know what to do with but investing in stocks (Disproportionate? Yes! But hardly)

respond if you got something to add.

All the troops from all countries leave Afghanistan. This is a worthy and laudable goal. At this point in time if that occurred here is what would happen. Afghanistan would return to a period of civil war. The Taliban would regain power. Women would be forbidden to receive an education, nor could they work, or leave their homes without a male relative escort. We would also see more public executions of women for violating whatever draconian laws the Taliban would impose. Look at Afghanistan September 10, 2001.
German troops are forbidden to take any other action than to defend themselves. So this helps the Afghan people how? Other countries have shown the courage to do more than just defend themselves. They take the fight to the Taliban. And I suppose in your world view this is a bad thing.
Obama a socialist. Income redistribution – his own words “we need to spread the wealth around.” Now I don’t have anything against paying taxes. I just have a hard time paying taxes in order to give tax rebates to those who don’t pay taxes. Or perhaps a simple analogy: Bobby sits and watches TV all day. His sister Susie goes out and works on the lawn and receives in payment two candy bars. Their father tells Susie to give Bobbie one of the candy bars because he doesn’t have one, regardless of the fact that he didn’t earn it through his own initiative and hard work. Obama’s income redistribution plan in a nut shell.
As to Obama out of office in two years. Can’t and won’t happen. We elect presidents every four years. But we also have elections for our House of Representatives every two years. Unless Obama shows some tremendous amount of success that the people of the USA agree with, we will see a turnover in who controls the house of congress, Democrats vice Republicans.

Seems like we have a different point of view, on the same subjects.
First: Yes, the german troops have no other order but to defend themselves right now. But maybe you know also, that there is a historical reason for it: after WWII the german weren´t even allowed to have an army and later that they were allowed to rebuilt, it was one of the most important decisions, that the german troops will never be the first ones to strike, but to react and to defend. In the historical context, this is a ethical commitment. If it is the right tactic for kind of a war zone, is a different thing. Plus I don´t think, that the Taliban will rule Afghanistan again, after the troops will have left. As long, as the nation building proceeds, and people get education and legal work they won´t get back to a state of religous fanatics. Like I said they haven´t been like that before the Soviets marched in. Like Iran at some time not to long ago - in a historical comparison - they have had a quite openminded civilisation.
Secondly: What you still call socialistic is democratic reality in many european states. I do agree with you, that to much regulation by the state is good, but you also have to see, that the U.S. retreated more and more from their social dutys over the last decades and that is why for example the health-insurance-sector is so messed up. And this is not only because people could not manage these things by themselves, but because corporations simply discharged from their duty to society.
It is just time to rebuild the State after what has been done to him through the last years. I mean look at this: without Halliburton the U.S. Army could not even act, because most logistic are outsourced.
But to come to an end and the original respond to your concern: it is neccessary that there is a grid for people that need help, it is needed, that those people that earn a lot more, also pay more, because this system will stop working otherwise some day. What do you think should happen in your opinion? Let people living in poverty, with health problems just die? Maybe you are for a kind of elite and the rest of the people can look for themselves? You are misunderstanding, where the wealth of few comes from: the work of many. And it is just right to give something back to the society you are living in. It is the wrong way to turn away because you maybe are disgusted from those “helpless”.
Third: Maybe you are right and there will be some adjustment in the congress in two years - would be just natural that the overwhelming result at this election will be corrected in some way. But Obama will still have the needed power to proceed with the reforms.

I notice that the right wing idiot response is that this an infringement of the NYT’s copyright. What is it with right wingers? They really have mental problems. I feel sorry for them.

Yes Men, keep up the good work.

Survival is the ability to see survival potentials in the future. I think that’s a good way to evaluate the above comments, as well as this paper!

Feel like I’m going to cry. Didn’t realize that the article was a satire until I had read it. Thought my father was going to be coming home for a minute there.

I can’t believe the stupidity that the writers of this false paper must have. The world doesn’t work this way, and the defense budget of the country, while hopefully reassigned to something such as education or healthcare, will never be totally frozen, as the Russians, Chinese, and other large nations will always develop new weapons that we must be able to defend from. Even Switzerland continually develops weapons, as it realizes that one day a nation may try to invade them despite their neutrality.

Also, the USSR was saved, not assisted, by the US during WWII. Anyone who studied history in college will know that the pressure the Japanese had on the Soviets, which was relieved by the United States, was critical to their victory in Europe. The US, France, England, and Canada’s opening of a second European front also saved the Soviets, otherwise a repeat of WWI might have been in order. Granted the US would have probably been forced out of Europe if it was not for the Soviets, no one side clearly was the deciding factor.

Tomorrows story… All terrorists living in these regions gladly put their weapons down and went back to farming…
You are idiots if you think we can pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan and the people there who hate us and attack our assets in the area wont bring the fight to us… I just hope they start a draft

Dear Non-believer,

Gays like YOU are the reason they think American SUCKS.
It’s a SHAME that I live in the same country as you do.

Should your mother married an Iraqi, you will be the one who’s responsible for 911, no doubt, belongs to a specie meant to be eradicated.

you, LOSER.

“Like us, they were surprised the Iraqis didn’t feel quite the same.” That’s brilliant. But yes, never too late to say you’re sorry and get the hell out!
