Two years ago, who would have dared to image we’d elect, as President of the United States, an African-American community organizer?

Six months ago, who would have predicted we’d enact universal health care, reform our education system, establish a maximum wage and “true cost” tax, and start taking steps to make our cities more livable — or that we’d so swiftly end the war in Iraq, and try for treason the leaders who took us there?

Yet we’ve done all that. Although we demanded change of Barack Obama, we understood that only we could bring about that change. And that’s why it happened.

Of course even with all these victories, we can’t let up for a second, and we can’t get tired. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned in the past two years, it’s that the most restful, energizing thing we can do is fight for a better world.

See the fine print for a few ways to do that.

It’s wonderful!
Should we also expect the closure of subversive media?
Labour camps for financial analysts and MBA graduates?

Way to go!

Dear Alice (in Wonderland), Thanks for a wonderful (sic) edition. Please advise why you neglected to include my article: “The Dodgers Return to Brooklyn”.

Good idea. Very creative in order to promote hope. The world need hope and the alternative media people have to work in create a better work
in finding the true and social justice.

Its funny to read these comments and be able to pick out the capitals. This is a great way to spread hope and ideals. What is so wrong with looking to the future with hope for a better world?

what a great idea… And it’s so good because it’s possible. A true manifest to change our world. This is the good side of globalization: we all share the same goals to a better and fair way of life. The path to achieve it is so short that makes us think why arn’t we there yet. But I think, for the first time in 37 years, that our children will live in a better world thanks to our generation.

Now, now, don’t be too disappointed when President Obama doesn’t swing as far left as some of you hope, or even if he doesn’t swing us any farther than what many of us consider the middle. President Clinton was perceived as doing that, and we got the Republican congress and their Contract on America in 94. It took until 04 to dislodge them. You shouldn’t expect, or want, the new administration to swing us as far left as the Republicans took us to the right, else you should expect to find them back in power sooner than you can imagine. Satire though this be (I think), you can expect them to point to this as evidence of who we really are. Moderation, people, that’s what the Cons lacked, and what done them in!

What an inspirational set of goals. Getting clean energy will take a little another few years but it too can happen (actually with higher likelihood than the wonderful maximum wage).

The only raw spot was the excessive job on Friedman. If he would have been in charge we would have had that July 4 democracy in Iraq without all the killing.

This is a singularly horrible set of goals. A maximum wage is one of the best ideas I’ve heard for finally crushing innovation, creativity, HARD WORK, and merit that I’ve heard in some time. Oh and universal health care? Single-payer seems to me to be the only “solution” to that problem, and christ that’s a good way to give EVERYONE poor care. Yes, some people cannot get adequate care now. This is mostly because our insurance system drives up costs arbitrarily. But I would rather have health care rationed by money than queue. And we all know how good the government is at management and cost efficiency… Last time I checked we still had a 10.5 TRILLION dollar debt, I don’t see how the largest new entitlement program in our history will help that. And Obama cannot possibly squeeze all that money out of the 5% most productive. And I won’t even go into how much the others sound like the Chairman espousing cultural revolution. If enough people believe this, we will go the way of Europe, and that way is to very certain decline.

Well done “Special” New York Times team!
Very nicely planned and excellently pulled-off! The level of hope you carry for the future is indeed enviable. It’s pleasantly contagious. Although you missed out on ending the war that the Bush government gave us (read: gifted us), here in Afghan-Pakistan region, but I am positive that sooner or later reason will prevail over your government’s hegemonic designs, hope will triumph over the ultimate brutality of your war-making machine and I dare imagine that on another bright day like this, U.S. will stop ‘liberating’ us and it will learn not to export the ‘democracy-of-terrorism’ to countries it just wants to be in. I wish I could only emphasize it anymore: People here don’t hate you because you are Americans, but only when you force us to be Americanish!
We wish you peace and a speedy recovery from the present economic illness that you have fallen into. May the 4th of July next, bring the best of your dreams to life. Ameen.

Of course all these people from other countries hope your articles come true; their dictatorships would never let them dream of such heady stuff, much less see it. Further, they live their lives in a profound bubble of jealousy generated by the media toward any democratic country where people can earn by trying and not live on the dole. Sadly, you in America have never had to live under socialism and to see its ugly underbelly. But you will!
